One of Brazil's oldest archaeological sites sits on the Serra da Lua in Monte Alegre, with rock paintings dated between 10,000 and 12,000 years old. On the same massif stands Pedra do Pilão, a rock sculpted by wind and rain with a view over the Amazon and the entire floodplain. Between Monte Alegre and Alenquer, a turning leads to the Vale do Paraíso waterfall, three drops that become spectacular in the rainy season. In Alenquer lies the City of the Gods, an eroded rock formation whose stones take on recognisable shapes depending on the angle: a lamp, a goblet, a doorway.
